Agents
Q. Do I really need an agent?
A. The agent is the one that gets you the jobs, negotiates the contracts and finds you the interviews for the jobs. Without an agent very little is going to happen. Some that have tried to work without agents have had job activity but the pay is usually less with fewer opportunities.
The choice is yours, but NOT using an agent is like trying to start a fire by
rubbing two sticks together. You will have much more success using matches, the
same is true about using an agent.
Q. How do I find an agent in my area?
A. We teach you how to do this in our Kids Hollywood Resource Center. There are many ways you can go about finding an agent, but we will show you the best and most successful ways to do this.
Q. How do I know if the agent I am working with is legitimate?
A. The best way to check the legitimacy of the agent you are working with is to check their license through your local government agency for licensing of the entertainment industry or your local Department of Consumer Affairs. We provide information about your state in
our Kids Hollywood Resource Center.
Q. Should I pay an agent before I get work?
A. No. Legitimate talent or modeling agents do not charge fees up front. Most work is commission only on secured jobs.

Q. Is it normal that I cannot get in touch with my agent?
A. Yes. Agents usually have hundreds of clients in addition to negotiating contracts, taking bookings, sending out clients on interviews and trying to promote their clients. They are much too busy to take calls which are not first priority. This is one benefit of having a manager as they will work with the agents and give you the personal time you require to answer questions and address your concerns.
Q. How can a manager help with working with an agent?
A. Managers are good in the sense that they deal with the agents for you. You should have a better relationship with a manager and much more communication. They usually work hand-in-hand with your agent to make sure you are getting as much exposure as possible in the business and help guide your career.
Q. How do I handle a situation if I have a problem with my agent?
A. If you have a manager, speak with your manager and they can usually resolve any issues. If you do not have a manager and you are unhappy with your agent, the best thing to do is to
try to schedule an appointment with your agent to have your child re-seen to
talk about these issues with the agent.
Q. What can I expect from an agent?
A. Your agent gets the
interviews for you, negotiates your contracts, ensures you get out on calls and
that you work as much as possible. They will also choose which headshots or composites are best to help sell you.

Q. What does an agent expect of me?
A. Agents are very busy so they expect you to listen and follow their instructions. They will want you to take care of your
photos (they will provide guidance on them), go to workshops they recommend, let them know when you are unavailable to work, arrive at the auditions on time and most importantly to be ready to work.
Q. How much do I have to pay an agent?
A. Agents are typically paid on a commission, based on each job worked. The commission rate will vary with the agent and the state you reside in. For more information on Agents please visit our
Kids Hollywood Resource Center.

General Show Biz
Q. Where do I go to get started?
A. The first step is to determine if your child has potential. We have created an online
Kids Hollywood Evaluation, which will help you decide if you and your child are ready. After you complete the evaluation, we will give you the results and provide tips and advice on what to do next.
Q. How old does my child have to be to get started?
A. We work with
newborns to teens. There are different requirements for each age grouping. We provide all of the details in the
Kids Hollywood Resource Center.
Q. What type of fees are there?
A. We go into detail about what expenses you can expect in show
business in the Kids Hollywood Resource Center. Expenses will vary by age, but you should check with your CPA as many expenses may be tax deductible.
Q. Do I need a portfolio to get started?
A. No. Portfolios are
mostly used for high fashion modeling work. It is usually a collection of
photography work done. Most models carry them in a modeling book to show at many
of the interviews they go to. In most cases, the print agents are very selective
in which photographers they prefer to work with to get their pictures or zed
cards done. We teach you all about portfolios in the Resource Center. In addition, we also provide a free online portfolio with your membership which will help you track your child's progress and of course, to show off your new star to all of your friends and relatives!

Q. How much money could my child earn for print or commercials?
A. Modeling or print
jobs are usually paid on an hourly or daily rate and is usually negotiated by
your agent. Union commercials always have a daily rate in addition to being paid
residuals, buyouts depending on if they are national commercials, regional,
wildspot, foreign or internet use. Non-union and extra jobs can vary a lot
in the way that they are paid and usually do not pay residuals.
Some children
are capable of making more than others due to their potential and the parents
commitment. Please know that there is a possibility that some children may not
make any money while others may make thousands and thousands, but the parents
commitment has much to do with it. By using the My Kids Hollywood Resource Center, your children have a better chance of making their dreams come
true.
Q. Do I have to pay commissions and to whom?
A. The only two people
your child would have to pay commissions to is always an agent and if your child
has a manager.
Q. How can I make sure I am contacting someone who is legitimate?
A. The best way to check the legitimacy of the agent you are working with is to check their license through your local government agency for licensing of the entertainment industry or your local Department of Consumer Affairs. We provide information about your state in the Resource Center.

Q. How do I find a good photographer?
A. If you are signed with an agent or manager, they will know the best photographers in your area.
IMPORTANT: It
is not wise to get professional photos before you get an agent. A professional
manager or the agent usually has recommendations for the photographers who they
like to work with in the industry. Many times you can use a good snapshot to
submit directly to an agent to get an interview for representation. Most of the
agents, like to pick the photos that they are going to use for the headshot or
ZED cards for themselves. Many parents make the mistake of doing this themselves
before they have secured the agent. For more information see our Resource Center.
Q. How much does a photo shoot cost?
A. The price of a shoot can vary greatly depending on
a number of factors. An average range for a Photo Shoot is $75 to $400. For more
information regarding photo shoots please visit our Resource Center.

Q. How do I find and what do I look for in a good workshop?
A. The answer to this question requires more detail than we can explain here. Please see the Workshop Section in the Resource Center. Many times your agent or manager will recommend workshops that would best benefit your child.

Q. What are the child labor laws in my state or country?
A. Please refer to the Child Labor Law section in the Resource Center.
Q. Does it help to enter pageants to get recognition?
A. Yes. Pageants often lead to an agent or manager noticing you. They provide good experience and help your child build self-confidence. The Kids Hollywood Connection has served as judges for many pageants including the Miss America Pageant, Miss California, Miss Orange County and many more.
Q. Should we relocate to California?
A. Relocating to California is not necessary to pursue a career in show business. Using MyKidsHollywood.com will teach you everything you need to know to start your kid's career close to home.
Q. Do I need a special tax accountant?
A. No. However, if you are not proficient in tax matters you may want to consult a tax professional to take advantage of all the deduction as a result of expenses that you may be eligible for.
Q. Does my child pay their own taxes?
A. You should always consult a qualified CPA regarding tax issues as we cannot provide
specific guidance on those matters. We can tell you that in our experience our children have paid their own taxes on money earned in show business.

Q. What can a parent legally do with the money earned by their child?
A. That depends on where you live. In the State of California, they enacted the Coogan Law over 60 years ago which sets guidelines on money earned. New York and New Jersey also have a law similar to California's Coogan Law but to a lesser degree. We cover laws and regulations in the Resource Center, but basically the Coogan Law requires that 15% of gross earnings must go into a blocked trust account in your child's name. To check your state, please login to the Resource Center.

Q. Do I need a Manager and how do I find a good Manager?
A. Managers can be very productive and can make sure your agent is submitting you as much as they should. The best way to find a good manager is to ask your agent for a list of recommended managers that they prefer to work with. That said, a manager is not required.
Remember that good managers offer more than just industry knowledge, they also offer years of experience and connections that can make
having a manager a valuable member of your team.

less prepared talent. We show you the requirements for your child's age group and more information on resumes in the Resource Center.
Q.
What is expected of a parent and child who wish to enter into show business?
